Heating a home comes down to two decisions: which fuel you will use and how the heat will reach each room. This section covers the main options for central and independent heating: pellet and biomass boilers, stoves and fireplaces, wood boilers and energy fireplaces, oil and gas boilers and burners, heat pumps and radiators, plus the materials and controls an installation needs. How to choose

• Fuel: pellets, olive pits (pomace) and wood are usually economical to run but need storage space and regular cleaning. Oil and gas run automatically with little attention, while a heat pump only needs electricity.
• Output: it depends on floor area, climate zone and insulation. Work out the output you need and choose a model close to it rather than far above it.
• Existing system: if you already have radiators, a new boiler or a water-heating energy fireplace connects to the same circuit. Heat pumps work most efficiently with lower water temperatures, as with underfloor heating or fan coil units.
• Space: solid-fuel boilers need a boiler room and a chimney. In an apartment, a compact boiler-burner unit, a wall-mounted gas boiler or a heat pump is usually the practical choice.
• Maintenance and automation: consider how often you can refill and clean the unit. Pellets with a hopper and automatic feed need less attention than wood.
