An electric water heater warms water with an electric element and keeps it hot in an insulated tank, ready to use. It is the simple option where there is no roof for a solar water heater: in flats, holiday homes, offices and shops, or as a backup next to another system. How to choose

• Tank size: depends on the number of people and uses; small tanks are enough for a kitchen or a lightly used bathroom, while a family needs a larger one.
• Mounting position: measure the wall or cupboard and make sure the wall can carry the weight of a full tank.
• Power supply: the heater needs its own circuit with a breaker in the electrical panel.
• Running costs: a timer in the panel limits operation to the hours when you actually need hot water.
• Central heating connection: if you want your boiler to heat the water too, look at the dual energy electric cylinders in the Boilers category.
