An air-to-water heat pump takes heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and transfers it to the water in your heating system through a refrigerant circuit. That water feeds underfloor heating, fan coil units or radiators, and with a suitable cylinder it also provides domestic hot water. In summer the cycle reverses, and the heat pump can cool through fan coil units or underfloor pipes. It runs on electricity alone, with no combustion or chimney, and delivers several times more heat than the electricity it uses. Here you will find Midea M-Thermal and LG heat pumps in monoblock and split versions, single-phase and three-phase.
How to choose
- Output: this depends on the building's heat loss and climate zone. A heat pump's output falls as the outdoor temperature drops, so size it for the coldest days in your area.
- Heat emitters: a heat pump works most efficiently with low-temperature water. Underfloor heating and fan coil units suit it very well; with existing radiators, check whether they are large enough or need upsizing.
- Monoblock or split: in a monoblock the whole refrigerant circuit sits in the outdoor unit and only water enters the house. In a split system the outdoor unit connects to an indoor hydronic module through refrigerant lines, which require a certified refrigeration technician.
- Electrical supply: larger models are often three-phase. Check your supply and whether you need a capacity upgrade from the network operator.
- Domestic hot water: if you also want hot water, plan for a cylinder designed for heat pumps, with a large-surface heat exchanger.
- Outdoor unit position: it needs free airflow, drainage for defrost water and some distance from bedrooms because of noise.
A heat pump performs only as well as its design. At Climaventis we carry out heating studies with a free initial assessment and recommend a model and output for your building, with installation by our partner installers. Call us on +30 2610 334 389 or visit our store in Patras.
