A heat exchanger in a buffer tank is used when a heat source must stay in its own closed circuit. The most common case is solar collectors running on antifreeze: their fluid passes through the coil and heats the heating water without mixing with it.
The boiler connects directly to the tank, so the sun helps the heating on autumn and spring days and the boiler covers the rest. The solution is especially suited to underfloor heating, which works at low temperatures.
