A heat exchanger in a Tank in Tank lets heat enter the vessel from a circuit that must not mix with the heating water. The usual case is solar collectors running on antifreeze: the fluid passes through the coil at the bottom and leaves its heat there.
The boiler connects directly to the buffer tank, as in the basic model. With a single vessel, the sun helps both the heating and the hot water, and the boiler covers the rest.
