Pellets, olive pits (pomace) and wood are renewable fuels, several of them produced in Greece, and they offer a steady alternative to heating oil. This category brings together biomass and pellet boilers for central heating, balcony pellet boiler units, pellet stoves that heat the air or feed your radiators, pellet fireplaces, and pellet and olive pit burners that fit a suitable boiler. The Werstahl Hercules boilers and the Werstahl Zeus and Poseidon stoves come from our own brand, alongside products from Mytherm and Ferroli.
How to choose
- Stove or boiler: an air pellet stove mainly heats the room it stands in. A water (hydro) stove, a boiler or a balcony unit connects to your radiators and heats the whole house.
- Single or multi-fuel: multi-fuel boilers such as the Werstahl Hercules burn pellets, olive pits and wood, so you can pick the fuel each season by price and availability.
- Output: work out the output you need from floor area, insulation and location. A boiler far larger than the load spends long periods at low output and builds up more deposits.
- Feeding and cleaning: hopper size, automatic feed and the cleaning system decide how often you will need to attend to the unit.
- Space and fuel storage: a boiler needs a boiler room, a chimney and a dry place for the fuel. Without a boiler room, look at the balcony pellet units.
How well a biomass system performs depends largely on correct connection and settings.
